Exploratory testing versus regression testing

Why discovery and protection are different jobs—and why strong QA programs need both.

01

Discovery asks an open question

Exploratory testing learns about the product while it tests. The next useful action depends on what the previous interaction revealed. This makes it effective for unfamiliar, changing, or ambiguous surfaces.

02

Regression protects a known contract

Regression tests repeat explicit expectations. They are strongest when the behavior and acceptable result are already understood.

  • ●Use exploration to find risk.
  • ●Confirm the behavior with product context.
  • ●Promote important discoveries into deterministic coverage.
  • ●Continue exploring around the protected paths.
03

Do not force one tool to do both jobs

A generated script can still be a script, and an autonomous agent should not replace a precise assertion for a critical accounting rule. Choose the mode based on the question you need answered.
